Testimonial: Caroline, Christina’s mum “Christina has always loved music. Growing up she enjoyed listening to modern and classical melodies and she requested specific pieces to be repeated over and over. At the start, I wasn't sure how she'll react to learning something new, being on the autism spectrum and having learning difficulties. [There was] excitement … followed by nervousness after realising that learning a new instrument can be daunting. It was also very challenging getting her to sit at the piano and do her daily practice … but she surprised me with how quickly she has embraced this whole new experience. In general she's less tolerant to loud sounds, like the sound of motorbikes, loud engines or a room full of people. Now she's happy to practice her songs and can't wait for her weekly lessons to share with Mary-Ann the beautiful sounds she can produce. I think learning to play the piano has given Christina a confidence boost. She realises that she's capable of learning something completely new and challenging at the same time. I did notice a huge improvement in her school work. Her memory, comprehension and reasoning, even her handwriting has improved. Learning the piano had such a positive impact on Christina. It has definitely improved her learning abilities, taught her persistence and dedication, qualities she'll hold for life.”

Testimonial: Sammi, Hursh's Mum “Music has been such a blessing for Hursh. Hursh’s self confidence has increased so much. Hursh feels so happy to show that he can play music to people who visit us – his speech therapist, his OT, uncles and aunties. When he plays, he plays with an air of confidence and looks majestic with his head held high. Hursh never seems to forget the songs he has learnt even when he has not played them for a very long time. Piano has helped him with his vocabulary. Most importantly, he feels relaxed and feels proud of himself. Hursh loves music but I was not sure that he would be able to learn music as he normally resists any kind of learning or following instructions but to my amazement, he was immediately attracted to the piano and now he looks forward to his piano lessons. Hursh is sensitive to sound. Hursh is a special boy with an immense love of music. Music not only calms him down but it also helps him to focus. Hursh can sometimes choke on food and music helps him to eat and swallow food.”

Testimonial: Megan, Caleb's Mum “Caleb always made a lot of "sing-song" noises as a baby, even before he could talk. And always loved to be sung to. He's always been very good at memorising tunes and lyrics. He's got a lovely singing voice and can really carry a tune!! We chose the piano also as a means to help a thumb deformity he was born with. Caleb’s sensory profile revealed a mild auditory sensitivity however it is unexpected/uncontrolled noises that bother him. Conversely he makes a lot of noise himself and seems to enjoy sound and noise if he can control it himself. He likes to be in control of the sound! We've also noticed his creative side too, making up songs and tunes and also collaborating with his older sister to write song lyrics!! I think when he first started [piano lessons] it was very much "a toy" and he liked to tinker around on it and make up songs … as the music and exercises increase in difficulty a bit of Caleb's perfectionism and anxiety come through. Caleb has a terrific memory and ability to learn new things, and seems to have a natural musical ability - this has been amazing to uncover!”
